Students considering a future in the automotive industry were given a glimpse into what they can expect of such a career during a recent Automotive Discovery Day hosted by MTA Queensland at its state-of-the-art workshop and training facility in Brisbane.
Part of the Automotive Gateway to Industry Schools Program, the Discovery Day is designed to introduce young people to the opportunities available across the automotive industry, and the event enabled students to learn more about apprenticeships, training pathways and emerging vehicle technologies in a real workshop environment.
14 students attended the Brisbane event, although demand was so strong that a further 13 students were placed on a waiting list – a result that highlights the strong interest from young people wanting to learn more about the industry.
Throughout the day, students participated in a range of activities with MTA Queensland staff and trainers guiding them through the program.
One key attraction was the Virtual Reality Technology experience, where students were able to experience immersive VR workshop simulations, while there also were Automotive Maintenance Basics sessions, where they were introduced to essential workshop skills and practical vehicle maintenance tasks. The activities provided participants with an opportunity to gain first-hand experience with tools, equipment and basic servicing procedures.
New vehicle tech was another major focus of the Discovery Day, with students exploring electric vehicle (EV) technology and EV systems, components and learning some details of the shift of the industry to electrification.
The wide variety of career pathways were also discussed, and students were able to ask questions about apprenticeships, training requirements and long-term career opportunities.
All participants who attended the event received a certificate of completion for MTA Queensland’s Getting Automotive Job Ready micro-credential program.
In addition to the Discovery Day activities, MTA Queensland also hosted its Vehicle Maintenance Course, which was run during the afternoon. Students interested in further developing their practical skills were encouraged to register their interest and learn more about future training opportunities.
According to MTA Queensland staff member Tegan Crossman, Project Manager for the Automotive Gateway to Industry Schools program, the strong student engagement throughout the day demonstrated the value of providing immersive, industry-led experiences.
“It was a fantastic event,” she said. “It was great to speak with students about careers in the automotive industry, inspire female students to consider painting apprenticeships, and discuss their potential next steps.
“All students who completed feedback on the day indicated they would have liked more time at the event, which is very encouraging. As a result, we will look to extend the duration of the next event, which is currently scheduled for October.”
In addition to the Discovery Day activities, MTA Queensland also hosted its Vehicle Maintenance Course in the afternoon of the same day. This course is designed to help participants develop practical knowledge for everyday vehicle ownership and is ideal for anyone wanting to learn basic preventative maintenance. A number of students completed both sessions.
The success of the Discovery Day reflects the growing importance of engagement programs in helping both to address workforce shortages while also introducing students to the opportunities available in the auto industry.
